Anxiety or Inner Guidance?

Learning to Feel the Difference in the Body

There is a voice inside us that whispers truth.

There is also a voice inside us that warns, protects, and sometimes panics.

For many women — especially those who have been the strong one, the responsible one, the intuitive one — these two voices can feel confusingly similar.

Anxiety can masquerade as intuition.
And intuition can be dismissed as anxiety.

So how do we tell the difference?

The answer is not in the mind.
It is in the body.


Anxiety Speaks From Contraction

Anxiety feels urgent.
It pushes.
It tightens.

In the body, anxiety often feels like:

  • A clenched jaw or tight chest

  • Shallow breathing

  • Racing thoughts that repeat

  • A need to fix something immediately

  • Catastrophic “what if” scenarios

  • A feeling of pressure or impending doom

Anxiety is protective. It is the nervous system scanning for threat. It often comes from past experiences, old wounds, or conditioned fear.

It says: “Something bad might happen. Prepare. Control. Hurry.”

Anxiety lives in survival.


Inner Guidance Speaks From Clarity

Inner guidance feels different.

Even when it says “no,” it does not panic.
Even when it asks for change, it feels steady.

In the body, inner guidance often feels like:

  • A grounded, calm knowing

  • A quiet pull or gentle nudge

  • Expanded breathing

  • A soft but firm “this isn’t right”

  • Peace underneath the decision, even if it’s hard

  • A sense of alignment

Guidance says: “This is not for you.”
Or: “Move toward this.”

It does not rush.
It does not shout.
It does not spiral.

It feels clean.


One Contracts. The Other Expands.

Anxiety contracts the body.
Guidance expands it.

Anxiety loops.
Guidance is simple.

Anxiety drains energy.
Guidance clarifies energy.

Anxiety is loud.
Guidance is steady.

The more we regulate our nervous system — through breath, grounding, touch, meditation, and honest self-inquiry — the easier it becomes to recognize the difference.

This is why healing the body matters.
Because a dysregulated nervous system will interpret intuition as danger.


A Simple Practice to Discern the Difference

The next time you feel unsure, try this:

  1. Pause.

  2. Place one hand on your heart, one on your belly.

  3. Take three slow breaths.

  4. Ask: “Is this fear… or is this knowing?”

Notice what happens in your body.

Does it tighten more? That’s likely anxiety.
Does it settle or soften? That’s likely guidance.

Your body does not lie.


Trust Is Built Through Listening

If you’ve spent years overriding yourself, it can take time to rebuild trust.

Be gentle.

Anxiety is not your enemy. It is a protective part of you that once kept you safe.

But your inner guidance — your deeper intelligence — is wiser than fear.

The journey is not about silencing anxiety.
It is about strengthening your connection to truth.

When you learn the difference, life becomes clearer.

And clarity is power.
